Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Robert F. Gibbs died at Albany Medical Center Tuesday, September 29 after a brief illness. He was born in Syracuse, New York, February 23, 1929, the son of Dr. Robert F. D. and Dorothy Haslach Gibbs. He spent his boyhood in Seneca Falls, New York, where he was a 1947 graduate of Mynderse Academy. He earned a B.S. degree in music education from SUNY Fredonia in 1952 and an M. S. in Educational Administration from Syracuse University in 1962. After graduation from college, he taught instrumental music at Sauquoit Valley Central School for nine years and performed in the Utica Civic Band, served as interim High School Principal for one year and was Assistant Principal for Business Affairs for three years. In 1965, he moved to Union Springs, New York, where he was employed at Auburn Correctional Facility, first as a music teacher, then as Academic Supervisor, and then as Education Director, from which position he retired in 1986. In 1999, he moved to Saratoga Springs, New York. On August 19, 1950, Bob married at Highland, New York, fellow college student Marjorie L. Cook, who survives him. Bob enjoyed camping and traveling around the country with a travel trailer. After retirement he and Marjorie spent winters in Tucson, Arizona. He was a crossword puzzle aficionado, avid reader, inveterate punner, and loved music, especially jazz and classical of all eras. He was a former member of the Union Springs and Tucson Sunrise Lions Clubs. Bob was a supportive partner to Marjorie in her genealogical research, and he researched, authored and published a complete genealogy of his mothers family. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his children, David R. Gibbs (Betsy) of Saratoga Springs; Richard C. Gibbs (Edith), of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; Susan G. VanArendonk (Mark) of Morristown, New Jersey; Stuart P. Gibbs (Angela), of Berlin, Maryland; and Brian T. Gibbs (Barbara) of Bad Homburg, Germany; and grandchildren Jason Gibbs (Danielle) of State College, Pennsylvania; Jonathan Gibbs, of Saratoga Springs; Benjamin Gibbs, of Cincinnati, Ohio; Robert Gibbs of Sparks, Maryland; William Gibbs, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; Kathryn VanArendonk of Stanford, California; Laura VanArendonk, of Morristown, New Jersey; Tarah Gibbs of Milledgeville, Georgia; Hailey Gibbs of Berlin, Maryland; and Anna, Emily and Liam Gibbs of Bad Homburg, Germany; one sister, Elizabeth G. Wylie of Columbia, Maryland, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 175 Fifth Ave. Saratoga Springs on Friday, October 2, from 7-9 p.m. Services will be held at the church on Saturday October 3, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, 175 Fifth Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866; the Saratoga Chamber Players, P.
