Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Robert P. King, of Howe Street, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 27, 2009) at Saratoga Hospital. He was 87. Born on Jan. 3, 1922 in Watertown, NY, he is the son of the late Percy E. and Melrose Paul King. He was educated in Orono, Maine and attended the Maine Maritime Academy. A US Army veteran from 1943 to 1945, he served in the European Theatre and was part of the Normandy invasion. Robert worked as a carpenter in Kennebunkport, Maine with many of his friends and later for W. J. Grandy & Sons in Saratoga Springs. He moved to Saratoga Springs in 1942 and married his sweetheart, the former Ruth M. Bennett. They were married for 57 years until her death on Feb. 13, 1999. A loyal member of the CRAFT club walking group, Gurtler Bros. Post 420 VFW, he was a third degree member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus, the Saratoga Assembly 745 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and a member of the Assembly Color Corps. He was a faithful parishioner for many years of St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church. In addition to his wife and parents, he is predeceased by one sister, Persis Manson. Survivors include four sons; Robert J. King and his wife Fran and Richard J. King, all of Saratoga Springs, Gerard J. King and his wife Marlene of Middle Granville and Michael P. King and his wife Elizabeth of Greenville, SC; many grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a very loving dear friend, Ines Schultheis of Gansevoort. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Friday (Jan. 30, 2009) in St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave. Military honors will follow and burial will be private. Members of the Knights of Columbus and Assembly Color Corps will meet at the church Friday morning at 10:45am. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway (584-5373).
