Robert McCaughey, age 84, of Monroe, New York, passed away at his home on May 10th, 2026.
Robert was born in Schenectady, NY in 1941. His parents, Carolyn and Raymond, recalled to him how they exchanged ration stamps for his baby supplies during the war. During happier post-war times, he would grow up just blocks from Central Park. He would spend his days there playing basketball, tennis, and skating.
A standout athlete and student, Robert achieved an early dream when he was accepted to Princeton University following his graduation from Mont Pleasant High School. As a proud member of the Princeton basketball team, he played alongside future U.S. Senator and New York Knick, Bill Bradley. Robert graduated in the Class of 1963, and he looked back on his years there with great fondness for the rest of his life.
While home from Princeton on break, he would meet the love of his life, Mary Anne Martin, also of Schenectady. The two would marry in 1963 and later settle in Monroe, NY, where they would raise their family and Robert would establish the beautiful flower gardens he would go on to cultivate for the rest of his life. They spent their summers in the Saratoga Springs region enjoying horse racing, fishing, and the Adirondack Mountains.
Like many Schenectadians, Robert began his career at General Electric. He would later specialize in water treatment and hold management positions at companies like Permutit and Zurn. Ultimately, he would go on to start his own consultancy, Business Development Services, and serve clients including Dow Chemical.
Robert was a man of deep and enduring Christian faith. His beliefs guided his life and were reflected in the kindness and integrity he showed to everyone he met.
He is survived by his daughter, Jocelyn; his son, Matthew; his grandchildren Chelsea, Christopher, Lucas, and Sophia; and his great-grandchildren Rose, and Grey. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Anne Martin McCaughey.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Robert’s memory to the Thoroughbred Retirement Fund (trfinc.org).
Visitation will be from 11am-12pm on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Busing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 (518-584-5373). A funeral home service will be celebrated at 12pm.
