Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Robert Gilmore Mitchell entered eternal rest on August 4, 2021 after a brief illness at Saratoga Springs Hospital. He was 85 years old.

Robert G. Mitchell was born in Saratoga Springs on January 3, 1936 to the late Robert and Eunice Jones Mitchell. He was one of three siblings; Karen (Paul) Brown and Jim (Barbara) Mitchell. On September 9, 1961 Robert married Carolyn Bowen, they celebrated 51 years together before Carolyn preceded in death April 1, 2013. They had three children; Lisa (Carl) Redcross, Glen (Simone) Mitchell, Robert G. Mitchell and three grandchildren; Andrea Whipple, Baylee Mitchell and Ashlie Adams.

He attended St. Peter's Academy, thereafter graduating from Al Penney Police Academy, Oneida, NY. This was just the start to Robert's illustrious career path as he went on to enlist in the United States Navy dedicating 20 years of service to his country. Upon his honorable discharge he worked in the following areas and/or positions; the Saratoga Springs Police Department, Welfare Fraud Investigator, New York State Park Police, Skidmore Police, Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety, Special Agent for Boston and Maine Railroad, NYRA Peace Officer, Saratoga County Sherriff Department and finally hanging up his hat after serving 22 years, at his favorite job, as Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency Director where he helped numerous veterans.

Robert Mitchell was a proud member of the following organizations: St. Clement's Church, Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge 161, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Adirondack Post 70 American Legion, Gurtler Brothers VFW 420, Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus,, Fleet Reserve, NY State County Service Officer's Association, National County Service Associations, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, NY State Advisory Committee for Veterans Affairs and former Congressman John Sweeney's Task Force.

Robert's favorite pastime included spending time with his fiancé Ms. Mary Anne Weatherwax, attending luncheons at the Racino with his brother Jim and sister Karen, watching his favorite teams the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots play, listening to music, playing the drums as well as enjoying the occasional cigar and Chivas Regal. Additionally, he enjoyed umpiring baseball and softball games, playing in pool tournaments with teammates Paul and Jordon, and attending yearly St. Patrick Day dinners for the Friendly Son's with 3 generations of Mitchells.

On most Saturdays he enjoyed attending church followed by dinner with Jim and Sue Bowen, and would listen to his granddaughters play the piano on some evenings.  Robert relished time spent with family, and through the years was actively involved in his children's school sports events, his love for sports and music was passed down, as well as encouraged in his grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are may call from 4pm – 7pm Tuesday August 10 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (518-584-5373). Appropriate face coverings and social distancing will be required.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am Wednesday August 11 at St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave.  Appropriate face coverings and social distancing will be required, per the family's request. Burial with military honors will follow at the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Ave.
