Saratoga Springs, NY: Moore, Robert L (Bob) passed away peacefully on December 28, 2010 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, NY surrounded by family. He was 81. Bob is survived by his wife of 53 years - Mary Catherine "Kay" of Saratoga Springs, NY, a brother Donald T of Westlake, OH, five children: Thomas D Moore (and Barbara Leser) of Raleigh, NC, Catherine Moore Gulock (Jeff) of Burnt Hills, NY, John R Moore (Maelynn) of Lansdale, PA, Mary Ann Proper (David) of Coxsackie, NY and Robert J Moore (Heidi) of Fairport, NY, and 10 grandchildren. Bob was the loving son of Donald T (1899-1981) and Gertrude V (1900-1990) Moore. Bob graduated as a mechanical engineer from the University of Vermont in 1953. He then embarked on an interesting and successful career at IBM. During the early 1950s, Bob was fortunate to meet with Thomas J Watson Sr. (IBM founder); this meeting featured some discussion on the future of electronic computing (as opposed to mechanical). Some years later, Dad would comment - "it appears computing had somewhat more of an impact on society than we thought possible back in the 1950s". Later in the 1950s, Bob was assigned a new secretary - Mary Catherine (Kay) Murphy, who hailed from Archbald, Pennsylvania. Kay, it turned out, was an excellent secretary - so Bob proposed and they were married on September 21, 1957 in Poughkeepsie, NY. Bob and Kay resided in Poughkeepsie until the mid-1990s, when they finally made the permanent move to their Saratoga Lake house. During his IBM career, Bob's missions included early development of solid-state logic; development roles in the IBM System/360, and advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies. Bob retired in 1987 as a Senior Engineering Manager at IBM East Fishkill, NY. He authored several patents during his IBM career. Bob was also fond of horses. During his retirement years, it was sometimes possible to locate him at the Saratoga Race Track, occasionally sporting a Martini while carefully studying the ponies. He did love Saratoga during racing season. Bob will be remembered most for the loving care he provided to Kay, through her decade-long progression to now advanced-stage Alzheimer's disease. The family would like to express thanks to the doctors and nurses of Saratoga Hospital and Albany Medical Center, the caregivers of Hospice care at St. Peters Hospital in Albany, Sandy, Tom and his wonderful therapy dog "Scotch". Relatives and friends may call from 3 to 4pm Saturday, January 1, 2011 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373). A memorial service will follow at 4pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Greater Albany Community Hospice at www.communityhospice.org or (518) 285-8166.
