EAST STROUDSBURG, PA - Robert P. Ryall, Ph.D., of East Stroudsburg, PA, succumbed to complications from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma on November 25, 2016 at the Kirkland Village Center's skilled nursing facility in Bethlehem, PA. He was 59.
Robert Paul Ryall was born on September 16, 1957 in Saratoga Springs. His parents were the late Ralph R. Ryall and the late Pauline (Smith) Ryall. He graduated from St. Peter's Academy prior to attending Le Moyne College, Syracuse, NY, from which he graduated, cum laude, with a B.S. degree in chemistry. From there he went on to obtain his doctorate in organic chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Ryall then completed postdoctoral studies in the laboratories of Dr. Richard Silverman at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, where he developed his skills in the rational design and synthesis of medicinal agents.
Dr. Ryall enjoyed a fruitful career as a senior level research chemist and project leader at Sanofi-Pasteur (formerly Connaught Laboratories) in Swiftwater, PA, where for over 27 years he assumed a leadership role in the development of new vaccines for human use. He was most noted for the discovery and development of Menactra, a vaccine for the prevention of meningococcal meningitis, for which he was the sole patent author. His work on vaccine development brought him to a number of countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa in order to monitor clinical trials and to facilitate regulatory approvals.
In his spare time, Bob enjoyed working on his property in East Stroudsburg where he practiced as an amateur landscape artist, using the plentiful boulders and field stones of the Pocono Mountains to build walls, walkways, and garden venues. He was also proud of his rose garden, which he cared for in a meticulous manner using many of the same techniques handed down from his grandfather, James A. Ryall, and great-grandfather, William H. Ryall, who was largely responsible for the layout of the original rose gardens on the Yaddo estate.
For annual get-aways, Bob enjoyed boating and kayaking with his sister's family on Lake George or biking and beach-going with his brother's family on Cape Cod. Bob was also an avid reader and a studious fan of thoroughbred horse racing.
Bob is survived by his sister, Beverly (Ryall) McGrath and brother-in-law, Michael McGrath, of Putnam Station, NY, as well as by his brother, Ralph R. Ryall, Ph.D., and sister-in-law, Deborah (Day) Ryall, of Cape Cod, MA. Survivors also include five nephews and nieces and five grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
A private family service was held at Connell Funeral Home in Bethlehem, PA. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 9am Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the historic Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. Burial will follow in the family plot of St. Peter's Cemetery.
