Saratoga Springs, NY – Roger E. Calkins passed away peacefully Thursday, November 30, 2023. He was 93.
Roger was born on September 18, 1930 in North Bay, NY on Oneida Lake. He was the beloved son of the late George and Veronica Lynch Calkins. He grew up in Whitesboro, NY where he attended kindergarten through high school. While in high school Roger played several musical instruments and was on the track team. He received a BA degree at Syracuse University and continued his graduate studies at Siena College. He joined the Naval Reserve while in college and upon his graduation was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy, serving with the Atlantic Fleet Amphibious Forces and served 4 years during the Korean War. Roger was a Senior Vice President at St. Clare's Hospital and after retirement became the director at the Schenectady Museum and Planetarium. He was a proud past member and Commander of the Adirondack Chapter of Korean War Veterans, a member of the Saratoga Springs Rotary Club and the Knights of Columbus. Roger also served on the Board of Directors for the Senior Citizens Center in Saratoga Springs and was a trustee of the Saratoga County Cultural Arts Council.
Roger and his wife Terry loved to travel. During the winter months they enjoyed vacationing in Long Boat Key, Florida for several weeks. They also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, especially Maine. Roger was known to be an excellent handyman and while living at Water's Edge on Saratoga Lake did some part time work using his special skills. Eventually he moved to Prestwick Chase where he enjoyed a more relaxing life with his wife Terry and made many wonderful friends. Throughout his life he enjoyed gardening, golfing, sailing, skiing, attending concerts and many other cultural activities. Roger will be missed by his cat Ginger, who he called "his pal".
In addition to his parents, Roger was predeceased by his son-in-law William Soltren.
Roger is survived by his loving wife Terry, four children; Daniel of Gilbert, AZ, Diane Dehmer of Clifton Park, James and his wife Ann of Ballston Spa and Kathleen Soltren of Greenwich, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends may call from 11am-12pm, Wednesday December 6, 2023 at St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12pm.
Burial with military honors will follow at 1:30pm at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd. Schuylerville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saratoga Springs Salvation Army (27 Woodlawn Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or https://easternusa.salvationarmy.org/empire/saratoga- springs/) whom Roger was a proud bell ringer during this time of year for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign.
