IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ronald T.
Millis, Sr.
October 29, 1930 – September 23, 2017
Saratoga Springs, NY - Ronald T. Millis, Sr. died at his home on Saturday, September 23, 2017. He was a lifelong resident of the city, which he loved so much.
Ron was born October 29, 1930 to parents Lina (Clingen) and George Millis. He attended Saratoga Springs City Schools, having played basketball and baseball at the senior high level. After graduation from high school in 1950, he attended Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey where he earned a BS in Education and participated in the U. S. Army ROTC program. Upon graduation from the university in 1954 he spent two years in the Army Military Police Branch as a First Lieutenant. He and Mary Rabe, also of Saratoga, were married on December 26, 1954, a marriage which lasted until his death. He earned a Masters in Education from SUNY Albany in 1958.
Ron taught social studies at the senior and junior high school level for 37 years, the first three years in Broadalbin, NY, where he coached the basketball and baseball teams. The majority of his career was spent in Saratoga Springs, where he served as Head of the Social Studies Department in the Junior High School. In the summers he looked forward to working with the Pinkerton Service (now Wackenhut Security) at the racetrack, which he did for some 25 years. He was made a Sergeant with the organization, an uncommon achievement for a local, seasonal officer. An avid racing fan, he spent most of his free time at the track during the race meet. In retirement he continued to pursue the study of Saratoga Springs history, Millis family history, the history of horse racing, and hikes on historical trails in the region with friends. He especially enjoyed the two-year-olds in training sales he worked with the Fasig-Tipton Company at Lone Star Park in Texas.
Ron was predeceased by his parents, his sister Beverley Jane Millis, and his dear friend Tinsel the cat. He is survived by his wife Mary Rabe Millis, sons Ronald T. Millis, Jr., LTC (Ret.) (Tessa Tarrantino) and Matthew S. Millis, daughter Tamarra Millis Chambers (Craig Chambers), and granddaughter Lauren Astrid Chambers.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, 112 Springs St., Suite 203, Saratoga Springs, 12866, in his name.
