Saratoga Springs, NY - Rose (Manilla) Collins was peacefully called to Heaven on Friday, January 27, 2012 while in the company of her loving family. She was 101. Born in Saratoga Springs, New York on December 16, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Christine Perillo Manilla. She graduated from St. Peter's Academy in Saratoga Springs in 1928, and was recognized as the oldest living alumnus. She was married to her late husband, Bernard J. Collins, in 1933. They raised their four children, Bernard, Robert, Joseph, and Rosemary, in Saratoga Springs and throughout the country while touring nationally with "The Bernie Collins Orchestra." After many years of touring, they returned to reside in Saratoga Springs, and Bernie continued to perform with his band, including USO tours during World War Two. Rose and Bernie later opened a roadside restaurant called "The Chili Bowl" on Route 9, which was later expanded and became "Bernie's Piano Bar." The business was expanded again and operated by their son, Joseph, and for many years was known as the "Joe Collins Restaurant." Over the years, Rose hosted guests and made many friends at the family restaurant, while at the same time, Bernie worked for the State of New York as Superintendent of Saratoga Spa State Park. Beginning in the late 1950s, Bernie and Rose spent many winters vacationing in Hollywood, Florida. Rose was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and an active member and communicant of St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church throughout her life. She was an avid reader, loved knitting, and spent a lot of time enjoying various local social clubs and organizations. Rose's joy was in seeing all of her children grow and have children of their own. In addition to her parents and her husband, Rose was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Manilla, and her sons, Bernard, Joseph, and Robert Collins. She is survived by her loving daughter, Rosemary, of Saratoga Springs, as well as seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their heart-felt thanks to Maplewood Manor and Hospice for their loving care and attention to Rose during her time living there.
