Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Rose Kathryn Matt, 3 months short of 90 years, of Bleeker St. and 3rd Ave. in Utica, NY died peacefully in her sleep May 25th, 2012 during initial diagnostic testing at Saratoga Hospital. Rose was born on August 23, 1922, the daughter of the late Anthony F. Matt (beloved father and founder of Matt Funeral Home) and mother Lena I. Viscosi Matt. Rose began her career of achievement by winning the Daughters of the American Revolution (Oneida Chapter) Good Citizens College Scholarship in her senior year at Proctor High School in Utica, NY (1939). Rose then went on to muster a four year degree from Cornell University, her college alma mater. Experienced from her high school days on the Proctorian yearbook staff, Rose excelled at procuring accounts for The Cornellian Yearbook, where she was advertising manager. After college and during WWII, Rose served her country working at wartime Revere Copper & Brass during their conversion phase. Rose then followed her college major acquiring an apprentice position at Rome State School as a clinical social worker (1946) (She was N.Y.S. certified in 1984). Rose commuted to the capital region where she maintained a 4 county territory case load for the distant Rome State School and the Oswald D. Heck Facility. She also served on the board of directors for the Matt Funeral Home during this time, eventually to sign off to pursue her sprouting career in social psychology. Concurrently, she met and married Nicholas S. Marchese of Albany, NY in 1950. Together they built their own home and raised sons Robert Samuel and Bruce Anthony in Latham, NY just north of Albany. 1975 brought the opening of a new Rome State School annex, Wilton Development Center in Wilton, NY. Rose had commuted 100 miles for 24 years to Rome to file her reports and now was being transplanted to this new facility as a senior social worker. She came to be known as "Mama Rose" and was well known for her sausage bread recipe. In attendance at her 40 year retirement dinner at the Wishing Well Restaurant in Wilton were 4 department head doctors and the director of Rome State School. Rose is survived by her two sons, Robert S. Marchese of Saratoga Springs, NY, and Bruce A. Marchese of Glenmont, NY, Robert's daughter Emily of Saratoga Springs, NY; and also many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was closely predeceased by her older brother John L. Matt and her sister-in-law Grace Jean Massaro, both of Rutger St. in Utica (1948 co-founders of Matt Funeral Services, Inc.). Family and friends may gather for a memorial service at the Calvary Chapel on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 12 noon. Rose will be laid to rest in the family plot at Calvary Cemetery in Utica. Many thanks are due to the courteous and diligent staff of the Saratoga Hospital. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Saratoga Hospital Foundation, 211 Church Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or online to www.saratogahospitalfoundation.org.
