Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Rosemary Hazard Benton, 91, passed away peacefully at her home Wednesday, March 4, 2015 surrounded by her family. Rosemary was a native of Saratoga Springs and the daughter of the late Victor J. and Esther Bullard Hazard. A graduate of Saratoga High School, she attended Mildred Elley and The College of Saint Rose. In addition to her parents, Rosemary was predeceased by her brothers, Dr. John D. Hazard and Victor Hazard both of Saratoga Springs and her husband James E. Benton who served as mayor of Saratoga Springs. They were married in Lincoln, Nebraska during the war, like so many others of the greatest generation. Survivors include her twelve children who all live in the Saratoga Springs area, James, Maureen (William) Colonell, Dermott, Lawrence (Leslie), Philip (Doreen), Bernice (Frank) Grear, Kathleen (Stephen Ramirez), Victoria, Christopher (Lisa), Elizabeth, Vincent and Agatha. She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren all residing in the Saratoga Springs area. Rosemary was a devoted and loving mother and wife who provided a warm and happy home for her family growing up in Saratoga Springs. A woman of great strength and beauty, both physical and spiritual, she was a compassionate and selfless mother who gave her love unconditionally to her children who will all cherish their own special memories of her. She received the most tender and loving care these past three years from her youngest child and namesake Agatha Rosemary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Friday, March 6, 2015 at St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Ave. at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373). In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Ladies of Charity, 142 Regent Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
