IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sandra Lee
Miles
April 22, 1945 – November 22, 2016
Saratoga Springs, NY – Sandra Lee Miles, wife of N. Richard Miles passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016 after a sixteen month battle with brain cancer. She was 71 years old.
Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on April 22, 1945 and raised in Albany, NY, she was the daughter of the late Frederick J. and Beatrice J. Longe (Crawford). Sandy graduated from the Milne School in Albany and then attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey where she graduated with a degree in Psychology. Later in life she earned her master's degree in clinical social work from SUNY Albany. She started her career as assistant director of an Upward Bound program in New Jersey. Later, she was the only undergraduate social worker hired at the Bonnie Brae School for Boys in New Jersey. After obtaining her master's, she worked for Parsons Child and Family Services, Albany, as residential treatment clinical coordinator. Sandy's love was working with children of all ages; she had an innate ability to work with not only children but with staff, administration and the family court system. She was widely recognized and respected.
Sandy was the most graceful skier and made the sport look effortless. She loved skiing with her husband, two sons and extended family, spending many weekends between Sugarbush, VT and Hickory Hill in Warrensburg. She loved the water; swimming, sailing with her husband and vacationing in Maine and Cape Cod. She enjoyed playing the piano and taught children and adults for several years from her home. Her quiet time was spent in her extensive backyard perennial garden, planting, trimming and keeping a journal for yearly comparison. For the last several years she loved getting together with her knitting group at The Common Thread in Saratoga and she always said "what happens at knitting group stays at knitting group." She did beautiful work that she shared with family and friends. After retirement she loved to go to Florida in the winter where she enjoyed walking the beaches and getting together with the many dear friends she made with a truly special group of people. Sandy will always be remembered as the ultimate lady. She was gracious, kind, understanding and very non-judgemental. Grandma Crawford, I am sure, is very proud of her. Sandy will be very much missed, but never forgotten.
Besides her parents Sandy is predeceased by her beloved niece Michal L. Matthews (Longe). Surviving are her husband N. Richard Miles; son Christopher J. Miles, wife Jessica, grandsons Ellery and Oisin; son David R. Miles, wife Shannon, grandson Colin; sister Janet M. Longe; brother Thomas F. Longe and his wife Laurie; brother Frederick J. P. Longe, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank Frederick Scialabba, MD, Glens Falls, NY; surgeon Tyler Kenning, MD, Albany Medical Center Neurosurgical Dept.; and Susan Weaver, MD, NYOH for their outstanding care; and Alice Benfry, Supervisor, Kelly Foley, RN and the entire staff of Community Hospice of Saratoga. They provided the most expert and supportive care to Sandy and the family throughout this trying time.
There will be no public calling hours and funeral services will be private at the discretion of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or The American Brain Tumor Association, 8550 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Suite 550, Chicago, IL 60631 or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Rd., 2nd Floor, Bethesda, MD 20814.
