Saratoga Springs, NY – Sheila O. Hyland passed away on December 27, 2022 at Ellis Hospital due to complications from a stroke.

Sheila was born on August 21, 1940 in Glens Falls, N.Y., the daughter of the late Joseph J. and Marion Francis (Rourke) O'Keefe. She graduated from St. Mary's in Glens Falls in 1959 and continued her studies at Mildred Elley in Albany, N.Y. Sheila began her career as a secretary with The International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulfite and Papermill Workers. She later worked as a teacher's aide in various schools in the Saratoga Springs City School District.

Sheila loved spending time with her family, especially her four grandchildren. She also loved to travel with her husband, Tom, of 47 years. The two of them traveled with the McKrells to Europe and visited Ireland numerous times. They also visited Italy, Germany and Scotland. They went on many cruises together where the various ports of call included St. Thomas, St. Croix, San Juan, Vancouver and Ketchikan, Alaska. Sheila enjoyed working on her various crafts, from scrapbooking to ceramics, stamping to crochet. It was always a treat for her family to receive one of her handmade cards for birthdays or other special occasions.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her loving husband Thomas F. Hyland of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., as well as her brothers Joseph and D. Michael O'Keefe. Sheila is survived by her son Kevin (Megan) Hyland of Shrewsbury, MA., her daughter Maura (John) Castle of Niskayuna, her three sisters Mary Ann Kipp of Nashville, Tenn., Margaret (Bruce) Potvin of Rye, N.H, and Patti (Thomas Murray) O'Keefe of Tully, N.Y., and four wonderful grandchildren, Alison, Jack, Amanda and Noah, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Monday January 2, 2023 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at the Historic Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, by the Rev. Thomas H. Chevalier, pastor. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Peter's Cemetery, West Ave.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Ellis Hospital for their excellent care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sheila's name, may be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
