Stuart, Florida – Sheila Dwyer Sheraton, 90, left this world peacefully on May 12th, 2026 at home with family.
Sheila Marie Dwyer was born in Manhattan, NY, on May 4th, 1936, the daughter of Dr. Thomas E. Dwyer and Margaret E. Dempsey. She grew up on North Broadway in Saratoga Springs, NY and graduated Saratoga Springs High School in 1954. She attended Briarcliff College, Parsons School of Design in NYC and C.W. Post on Long Island, NY.
In 1956, Sheila married the Rev. William Sheraton, her tall, dashing airline pilot. Bill passed away in 1981 and remained the love of her life for the rest of her life.
Up until her passing, Sheila was a freelance artist, painter, children’s book writer and illustrator. In the 1970s and 1980s she owned and operated a health food store in Riverhead, Long Island called “The Green Earth” before moving to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in 1989 to be with her grandchildren. While there she wrote and illustrated her own children’s book, painted murals, exhibited her paintings in various shows and created commissioned works for interior designers and collectors. She was a member of several art associations and a member the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. She moved to Clinton Corners, NY for a few short years in the early 1990s where she shared “Two Sisters Studio” with her sister, Sue, before moving to Stuart, Florida ever since referred to as “Paradise”, and remained there until her death.
Sheila is pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, and her daughter, Abigail Blair Sheraton. Her brothers; Thomas “Burke”, Brian, and Lawrence “Larry”. Her sister, Suzan Dwyer Richardson and nephew, Seth Ramsdill. And, her long-time best friend, Westie Terrier, “Charlie”.
Sheila is survived by her daughter, Pamela Slattery (James E. Slattery III, deceased) of NYC. Granddaughters; Justine Brook Slattery of Winsted, CT and Shannon Dwyer Slattery of Baiting Hollow, NY and her beloved grandson, Collin James Slattery of Brooklyn, NY. Her daughter, Amelia Martin (Doug) of Sherwood, OR and their children, Alex of Seattle, WA and Christopher of Sherwood, OR. She is also survived by her beloved nieces; Dorie Roselle (Frank) of Wilkesboro, NC, Sharon Dwyer Bolton (Rick Bolton) of Greenfield, NY, Molly Dwyer (John Brooks) of Saratoga Springs, NY, Cathryn “Katy” Dwyer of Greenwich, NY. Nephews; Thomas E. Dwyer II of Fort Edward, NY, Christopher Ramsdill (Dione) of Wilton, NY, and Zachary Ramsdill (Robyn) of Fort Mill, SC. Grandchildren, great-grands, a batch of great-nieces and nephews all of whom she may have wanted to name, and many close friends who loved her dearly and of which she considered family.
In addition to her art career, Sheila was a lifelong tennis player, card shark and arm wrestling champion. She loved to sing and carry on with her Dwyer family in Saratoga Springs, play Gin and watch old movies. Sheila’s name or image is likely to pop up if you were to Google the following keywords: Radiant and Irresistible, Confident and Creative. Magnetic and Magical. Flirty, Feisty and Fabulous. Fondly referred to as Nans, Tigger, The Energizer Bunny and Mary Poppins. If she liked you, you were affectionately addressed as “Doll.”
A Celebration of Sheila’s Life will take place in the near future and Interment will be in the Dwyer Family plot, St. Mary's Cemetery of the Visitation, Schuylerville, NY.
