Ballston Spa - Shirley V. (Smith) Garnsey, of Malta Ave. Ext., passed away Saturday morning (July 11, 2009) at the North Carolina home of her daughter. She was 86. Born on July 31, 1922 in Saratoga Springs, NY, she was a daughter of the late Harold J. and Mary (Jordan) Smith. A US Navy veteran of World War Two, she was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant (jg) in 1947 and from the Reserves in 1951. She had worked for many years as a registered nurse for Saratoga County Public Health prior to her retirement. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, John L. Garnsey, who died Sept. 3, 2003 and one son, Robert Garnsey. Survivors include two sons, Thomas Garnsey of Georgia and Richard Garnsey of South Carolina; three daughters, Irene Whalen of Union Mills, NC, Diane DiSiena of Saratoga Lake and Veronica Heard of Ballston Spa; three brothers, Jack, Jerry and Mike Smith; one sister, Patricia Ryall; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Tuesday (July 14, 2009) in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 167 Milton Ave., Ballston Spa. Burial with military honors will be conducted at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. There are no calling hours.
