West Athens, NY - Steven J. Kastner, aged 52, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2012 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany NY. Following a long and spirited, nearly life-long battle, he succumbed to a relentless illness. Born in Long Island, NY on June 30, 1959 to Elaine and John, he resided in Green County for the majority of his life, and rarely felt comfortable away from the shade of leafy trees. The woods of Green County seemed to anchor him and provide direction. Steven graduated from Cairo Central High School. He was an auto mechanic of repute, and for years, raced at Lebanon Valley. In later years, he became an employee of Community Green Community College in the Audio-Visual Department. He enjoyed working with college students and found pride and self-worth in his accomplishments. He attended classes and, but for his illness, nearly finished his degree. Steven was a member of the West Athens Volunteer Fire Department and served for several years. While his religious affiliation was rather tentative, Steven displayed the best behaviors found in all good people, gentleness, kindness and the ability to accept all. He refused to cause harm to others and displayed behaviors consistent with splendid character. Steven was predeceased by his mother Elaine, who he has grieved deeply. Survivors include his two children, whom he greatly missed. Also, his father and two brothers remain and now grieve him. There will be a private family service, and a memorial service to be announced in several months. He will be brought home to rest. Many people were kind to Steven over the years. We would like to sincerely thank them all for their understanding and generosity. To the staff and physicians at St. Peter's Hospital, you have our respect and admiration. We should all be as dedicated as you. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373).
