IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas Joseph
Healy
January 14, 1936 – May 1, 2023
Thomas Joseph Healy, 87, died peacefully on May 1, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
A lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs, he was a devoted husband, beloved father, grandfather, and friend. He leaves a distinguished legacy of civic and community leadership in this City that he loved so much.
Tom was born to Helen (Corcoran) and William James Healy on January 14, 1936. He grew up at the corner of Caroline Street and East Avenue, just steps away from the East Side Rec, where he spent his childhood days playing any and every sport with his pals. He graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 1954, and from Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA) in 1958 with a B.S. in Business Administration. In 1962, he married Linda Elizabeth Ryan, and they were blessed with sixty-one years of marriage and many adventures together.
In the late 1960s, Tom and his brother, William J. Healy, took over leadership of the business that their father founded in 1929, Congress Gas & Oil Company. The company grew into one of the largest petroleum distributors in the northeast and diversified to include over thirty gas stations, two car washes, convenience stores, bulk lubricants, and installation and service of Carrier Heating & Air Conditioning products. For a time in the 1970s, Congress Gas & Oil was the largest employer in the City of Saratoga Springs. Tom was a member, and then president, of the Empire State Petroleum Association. As a successful local businessman, he served as a Board Member of The Adirondack Trust Company for many years. Tom's word was his bond and he earned the respect and trust of everyone who knew him or did business with him. He retired in 2003, after the sale of the different divisions of Congress Gas & Oil to other local businesses, including Stewart's Shops.
Tom's civic involvement and support for Saratoga Springs was endless. He held leadership roles in the Saratoga Springs Lions Club, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks # 161 and the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick. He supported the Boy Scouts, Saratoga Springs High School sports teams, and many more. Starting in the 1970s, for over two decades Tom was a member of the Saratoga Springs Planning Board and part of a group of local business leaders who helped establish the blueprint for the thriving City we know today.
He was a gifted multi-sport athlete. In his senior year, as captain of the Saratoga Springs High School baseball and basketball teams, he helped both teams win the Sectional title. Tom's basketball talent earned him a full scholarship to Lehigh University, where, in his senior year, he was team captain and named one of the top 100 players in the Northeast by National Sports magazine. Tom was inducted into the Saratoga Springs High School Blue Streak Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019. A long-standing member of the Saratoga Golf & Polo Club and the Plantation Golf & Country Club in Venice, FL, he was an excellent golfer and made a hole in one on three different golf courses.
For over twenty years, Tom and Linda spent winters in Venice, Florida, where they created a wonderful community of friends. He was a member of the Plantation Community Foundation and a leader of the Harrington Lake Homeowners Association, where he led the effort to make many improvements to the community.
Tom was a communicant of Saint Clement's Church. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Elizabeth (Ryan); three loving children: Thomas Joseph (Sally) Healy, Jr. of Wilton, CT; Kelly Marie Healy, of Saratoga Springs, NY; and Erin Anne (Sarah) Healy, of Brooklyn, NY; three adored granddaughters, Sarah Cawley Healy, Elizabeth Ryan Healy, and Nancy Corcoran Healy; his brother, William J. (Joan) Healy, nephew William P. Healy, and niece Kathleen H. Tomaski.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Woodlawn Commons and the Home of the Good Shepherd. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a donation in Tom's honor to the Saratoga Lions Club.
