Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Joseph Loya of Saratoga Springs, NY, passed away on October 31st, 2026. Tom was born on May 15th, 1941, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, to the late Thomas Edward Loya and Viola Loya.

In his younger years, Tom worked as a union painter, specializing in painting bridges. Later, he ventured out on his own as a contractor, building a successful business and employing several workers along the way. At times, he even had the opportunity to work alongside his own sons, making those working years a special part of his family story. Tom took pride in his work and was known for his dedication and hard work.

Outside of work, Tom enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors. He was also an avid Buffalo Bills fan and proudly cheered on his team.

Tom treasured the time he spent with his beloved wife, Shirley. He especially loved the family traditions of gathering together for big holiday meals. Those gatherings, surrounded by family, were memories he held close to his heart. Family was an important part of Tom's life.

Tom was a very independent and stubborn man who could sometimes come across as tough on the outside, but underneath that tough exterior was one of the sweetest men you could ever meet. He had a special gift for making friends wherever he went and was often described as such a joy to be around. His kindness, warm heart, and personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Those who knew Tom understood that behind his strong-willed nature was a heart full of love.

Thomas was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Louise Loya; his son, Thomas Edward Loya; and his siblings, Edward Loya, Alfred Loya, Douglas Loya, Janet McMillan, Phyllis Randall, and Beverly Terry.

He is survived by his sons, Jeffery Loya (Kathy) and Robert Loya Sr.; grandson Robert Loya Jr.; great grandson Matthew Loya and his nephew, Jason Brueckner (Samantha), who held an especially special place in his heart. Tom was especially close to Jason and often referred to him as one of his own sons. He is also survived by his siblings, Elizabeth Flowers (Titus), Arthur Loya (Linda), Joyce Richards (Bruce), Richard Loya (Theresa), Jerry Loya (Sharon), and William Loya (Anna).

Tom leaves behind countless nieces and nephews, along with extended family and loved ones who will cherish his memory.

Tom will be remembered for his hard work, his love of the outdoors, his devotion to family, his loyalty to his beloved Buffalo Bills, and above all, the kindness and sweetness that made him so special. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
