IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Timothy I.
Shoen
July 7, 1954 – August 10, 2025
Dr. Timothy Shoen, 71, passed away Aug. 10, 2025, at Saratoga Hospital following an extended illness. Born July 7, 1954, in Troy, N.Y., he was the beloved son of the late Robert and Carolyn (Iler) Shoen.
Tim grew up in Syracuse, N.Y., and graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in 1972. During those high school years, Tim enjoyed many sports, playing CYO basketball, summer league baseball, and he was a member of CBA's indoor track and cross-country teams. During his senior year, Tim was on the school's televised "It's Academic" team.
Tim completed his undergraduate studies at Hamilton College, graduating in 1976 with Bachelor of Arts in History. At Hamilton, he was co-author of a weekly sports column, "Nobody Asked Me But …" in the school newspaper, something he was particularly proud of. He earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from SUNY Upstate Medical Center, in 1980 and later completed an internship program at the University of Tennessee Medical Center of Knoxville. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine through the University Of Massachusetts residency program in 1985. Tim was board certified in Emergency Medicine.
As an emergency room physician, Tim worked in many hospital settings throughout his career and eventually settled his family in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where he later was co-founder of the Saratoga Emergency Physicians (SEP) group. Tim was a part of SEP from 1989 through 2000.
From 1995 through 2014, Tim served as chief medical officer at St Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, N.Y. He retired from medicine and stayed active in the medical community by focusing his attention on patient safety and healthcare quality. In 2017, Tim earned a Master of Science degree in healthcare quality and safety from Thomas Jefferson University. He was also proud to serve for many years on the board of the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Tim was often considered the family resource for medical information and/or treating minor mishaps. At one gathering, after one such mishap, Tim jokingly held a family member's finger up to the ceiling light to diagnose it and declared, "No, it's not broken!" And it wasn't.
Outside of medicine, Tim had many interests. He had a lifelong fondness for music. After receiving an electric guitar for his 13th birthday, Tim explored any and all musical genres, developing a special affinity for The Beatles and Jimmy Buffet. He was a devoted supporter of Steak Nite, a band that formed at Hamilton College, and later Ceili Rain, a band formed by Bob Halligan, one of Steak Nite's founders. Tim was especially known for creating playlists and gifting cassettes and CDs for holidays, road trips and any occasion deserving a collection of song tracks to enjoy.
Living in Saratoga brought Tim much pleasure, especially during the summer months. He was often found in the audience at SPAC, walking downtown for dinner, or at the paddock checking out the horses for the next race. In fact, Tim spent many a summer day at the nearby Saratoga Race Track prompting the development of his hobby, horseracing and handicapping. Tim became a skilled race handicapper, leading him to become a writer and public handicapper for the Leader Herald in Gloversville, N.Y. Tim was one of the founders of Iler Stables, which owned the horse Spuyten Duyvil. Spuyten Duyvil came in first in a race at Aqueduct on Nov. 27, 1991. The winning jockey was the then 20-year-old John Velasquez, a future inductee into the Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
Tim was preceded in death by his wife of 12 years, Bette Tetu-Shoen, longtime companion, Andrea Gardner, as well as his parents Robert and Carolyn Shoen, sister Margaret Susan Shoen and brother Patrick Matthew Shoen.
Tim is survived by daughters, Kara Lindsay Shoen of Ballston Spa, N.Y., and Megan Konstantakos (Peter) of Binghamton, N.Y.; and his granddaughter, Nikoleta Konstantakos, who was the "light of his life." Tim also leaves brothers Stephen Shoen of Ft. Myers Fla., and Michael Shoen of Albany, N.Y..; sisters Catherine DeSanti (James) of Inverness, Fla., and Marianne Hunter (Joseph) of Wynantskill, N.Y..; an aunt, Agnes Regan, of Tucson, Ariz., and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends who will also treasure Tim's memory.
The family is forever grateful to all the staff members at Saratoga Hospital, especially on D1, for their kindness and expert care during Tim's illness.
