Saratoga Springs, NY - Verona F. (Hughes) Conners, formerly of Embury Apts. passed peacefully Monday (Mar. 1, 2010) at the Wesley Health Care Center surrounded by friends and family. She was 87. Born on Jan. 5, 1923 in Middle Granville, NY, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Mary E. (Thomas) Hughes. The family moved to Saratoga Springs in 1931 where she graduated from high school in 1941. She was employed by Van Raalte & Company for 11 years as a supervisor of shipping. After marrying in 1951, she worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in San Francisco until 1955. While raising two children, she was secretary to the principal at Dorothy Nolan School until retiring in 1980. Throughout her life, she quietly served her community as choir director, Sunday School teacher, assisting Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, and in later years knitting and crocheting hundreds of hats, mittens, Sweaters for Kids and afghans for After the Fire. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her son, Bruce E. Conners, who passed away on June 15, 1974. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Robert E. Conners; her daughter, Karen S. Conners of Duanesburg, NY; her brother, Ernest L. (wife, Betty Rowland) Hughes of Hillsboro, OR and several cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Verona's life at 3:00 pm Monday (Mar. 8, 2010) at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373). There are no public calling hours.
