Saratoga Springs, NY - Virginia L. Smith Young of Moravia, NY and Naples, FL passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2017.
Virginia celebrated her 95th birthday with family and friends in February 2017. Ginny, as known to many, was born in Powellton, WV to the late Nellie and Charles C. (Dutch) Mounts. She worked for the Moravia Central School in the guidance department from the 1960s to the late 1980s when she retired. Her journey in life was very full, including growing up in rural West Virginia, living in Cranford, NJ when her children were young, and moving to a farm in Moravia for 25 years. She lived over 20 years in Naples, FL and enjoyed many special moments over the past ten years in Sheffield, MA and more recently Saratoga Springs, NY. While retired she often drove between Florida, New York, New England and Virginia to see family. She voluntarily surrendered her driver's license when she was 93.
Virginia always claimed to be just a little country girl from the mountains, but she was smart, witty, inquisitive, extraordinarily inclusive for a person of her time, generous sometimes to a fault, adventurous, straightforward, and unpretentious. She liked to cook and loved to eat. Above all, she was a free spirit who lived life on her own terms.
Virginia will be missed by her family, including sons Richard (Kathleen), Ronald (Danny), Robert (Jacqueline) and Raymond (Johanne) and grandchildren Erik, Howard, Tommy, Ryan, Taylor, Christopher and Vanessa and her great grandchildren, Wyatt, Wilson and Vivian. There are many, many other individuals who have been very special in her life – the family thanks all.
Virginia was predeceased by her sister and brothers and her late husband Leon R. Smith, whom she met in their high school band, and who passed away in 1982. Later in life she married Donald Young, who is also deceased.
Services will be private for the family. Virginia loved her cat Robin, and donations are encouraged to be made to a local humane society. She also requested that a tree be planted in her memory if anyone was so inclined.
Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (518-584-5373).
