IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Walter
Doyle
February 19, 1926 – September 30, 2017
Saratoga Springs, NY - Walter Doyle, 91, died Saturday, September 30 at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by loving family members.
Born in Daytona Beach, Florida, Mr. Doyle grew up in Tannersville, NY, in the Catskills, where his family owned an insurance brokerage, his mother was the Postmaster and his father, New York Yankees pitcher, known as Slow Joe Doyle owned Doyle's Garage.
After graduating high school in 1944 Mr. Doyle entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. After his return from service he worked at the family insurance agency and enjoyed being a recreational pilot. In 1961 he began his career as an Appraiser of Land Acquisition for the New York State Department of Parks and Recreation in Albany and Saratoga. His land purchase assignments created state parks for Moreau, Grafton Lakes, Castleton Island, and throughout the High Peaks region. After retirement he enjoyed reading, world travel, and a regular golf game every Tuesday with his friend Harry Earle.
Active in the community, Mr. Doyle was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and a proud member of the Lions Clubs for 58 years and was a charter member of the Lions Foundation. His participation on the Sight Committee earned him the Uplinger Award for his contributions. Most recently, he received his most cherished honor: the first Lions Veterans Award for his service as a WWII Veteran.
"Dad always said the Lions Club was like a second family to him. As kids, my brothers and I helped him sell light bulbs door-to-door for the Sight Committee. The Veterans Award he received this year for his service to our country touched him deeply," said his daughter, Mary Louise.
Reflecting on Mr. Doyle's membership to the club, Past President Phil Klein added that, "Walt always enjoyed a good joke and sharing it with the group."
Mr. Doyle is survived by sons John (Elisa Dearhouse) of Haddonfield, NJ; James, (Oaksu) of Gulf Breeze, FL and daughter, Mary Louise (James) of Chester County, PA. In addition to his children, he is survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane (nee Graham) Doyle and parents, Mary Louise (Lackey) and Judd Bruce Doyle.
