Saratoga Springs – Walter J. Gurren, Jr., of Saratoga Lake passed away peacefully at home on May 8, 2026, with his family and “guard dog” Cooper at his side.
Walter was born in Albany, August 5, 1941, the son of the late Walter and EleanorGurren. He graduated from Colonie Central School and enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served 4 years during the Cuban Crisis.
After returning from his Navy service, Walter worked for Tobin Packing Company and later retired from Saratoga Raceway as a carpenter.
His greatest joy and happiest achievement was being a father figure to his grandson Michael and sharing those special times on the lake.
Walter is survived by his wife of 61 years, Muriel Fiorillo Gurren; daughters Kelly and Tracy (Andrew Palmateer); 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and his sister Peg Backstrum.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings Ann, Mary, and John.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Graveside Service, with Military Honors, Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 12:30 pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871. A reception will immediately follow at Old Saratoga Eatery, 112 Broad Street, Schuylerville, NY 12871.
