Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - William E. Dalrymple, of Outlook Avenue, passed away Thursday (Sept. 13, 2012) at the Capstone Center for Rehabilitation in Amsterdam. He was 92. Born on Sept. 26, 1919 in Lake George, NY, he was a son of the late William "Jay" and Ada (Hayes) Dalrymple, and grew up on the family farm. Following high school, he entered military service in the US Navy and fought in the Pacific Theater during World War Two. A graduate of Ithaca College, he met his wife Pat and began his coaching career in Hartwick, NY. Soon thereafter, they moved to Saratoga Springs and Bill coached for 30 years prior to his retirement. He coached both basketball and football for many years, first at Saratoga Springs High School and also at the former St. Peter's Academy on Broadway. Along with his career in coaching the youth of the Saratoga Springs area, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying all outdoor activities. Always with a story to tell and a sense of humor, he taught innumerable athletes many lessons in life and was always well-respected. He was an honoree and inducted into three area Hall of Fames: Saratoga Springs High School, St. Peter's Academy/SCC and most recently the Capital District Basketball Hall of Fame. He also worked evenings at Saratoga Harness Raceway and during the summer months was employed at the Saratoga Race Course. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Patricia in 2003, one daughter, Sharon in 2002 and his five siblings. Survivors include four sons; William Jay and Mark Dalrymple, both of Saratoga Springs, Michael of Ballston Lake, Peter and his wife, Susan of Graham, WA; two daughters, Marie and her husband, Preston of New Strawn, KS and Tara of Ocala, FL; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 5pm Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway 584-5373. Funeral services will be conducted at 10am Monday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in the family plot at Evergreen Cemetery, Lake George. Memorials may be made in Coach Dalrymple's name to Saratoga Central Catholic High School Athletic Department, 247 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
