Saratoga Springs, NY - William (Bill) S. Hopps, of Saratoga Springs, died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2009) at the Wesley Health Care Center. He was 86. Born in New York City on Sept. 4, 1922 to the late Sarah (Campbell) and William Hopps, Bill was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving in Germany, France, and Turkey. After 20 years of service to his country he retired as a First Sergeant E8. During his retirement Bill worked for various companies near his home in New Jersey. He found joy in his latter years in woodworking and volunteering as a docent at the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs. Bill was an active member of St. Clement's Church and served as an usher and performing small maintenance work for the church. Bill was predeceased by his first wife of 38 years, Josephine (Lenhart) Hopps, in March of 1986, and his sister, Hazel. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary (Novak) Hopps of Saratoga Springs; daughters, Joanne (William) Winn of Bloomsbury, NJ and Lisa (Scott) Weber of Yardville, NJ; sons, James (Barbara) Hopps of Alpharetta, GA and David (Diana) Hopps of Germantown, TN; seven grandchildren, Kelly, David, Jennifer, Jaclyn, Sarah, Daniel and Meredith and one step-grandson, Brandon; four great grandchildren, Jonathan, Collin, Andrew and Thomas, as well as two-step great grandchildren, Alexander and Benjamin; his niece, Helen Roberts and a half-brother, Al Hopps. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm Sunday (Jan. 25, 2009) at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30am Monday in St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Avenue. Burial will be in New Jersey. The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff at Wesley Health Care Center for the outstanding care and compassion Bill received during his stay.
