Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - William J. Zorn, Sr. of Second Street, passed away Thursday (Aug. 27, 2009) at the Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany following a long illness. He was 84. Born on June 22, 1925 in Saratoga Springs, he was a son of the late Joseph W. and Leona Lester Zorn. William proudly served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict, receiving the World War II Victory medal, Army of Occupation medal and two Purple Hearts. He worked as a steamfitter for 37 years at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady. William was a member of the American Legion Adirondack Post 70, Gurtler Brothers V.F.W. Post 420 in Saratoga Springs and the Local 128 Steamfitters Union. He loved all animals, he owned and raced horses, enjoyed going to the Saratoga Gaming and Racing, and spending time outdoors fishing and hunting. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude A. (Capone) Zorn, who died Oct. 3, 2003 and his sister Dorothy Mixon of Jamestown, NY. Survivors include five sons, William J. Zorn, Jr. and his wife Leslie of Galway, John N. Zorn of Gold River, CA, Joseph Zorn and Michael Zorn of Saratoga Springs, Timothy J. Zorn of Clifton Park; one daughter, Kimberly Mielke and her husband Robert of Clifton Park; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and longtime special friend Beverly Coleman of Saratoga Springs. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 8 pm Monday, Aug. 31, 2009 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373). Funeral services will be 11am Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009 at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in the family plot at St. Peter's Cemetery, West Ave. Memorials may be made in his name to Community Hospice of Saratoga 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or Albany Stratton VA Center, 9B Hero's Way, 113 Holland Avenue, Albany, NY 12205.
