Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY – Wyman Luther Emery passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at the age of 82, with his wife of 44 years at his side.  He was a very loving, supportive husband and had a wonderfully full life.

Born in Harvard, MA in 1933, he was the son of the late J. Donovan and Rosamond (Cleaves) Emery.  Wyman attended Milton High School, becoming editor of their magazine. He then worked his way through Harvard, majoring in Economics and graduated with honors. While there he joined the Pi Eta Club and received an undergraduate scholarship. Wyman played in-house squash, he wrestled and was on the Harvard Tennis Team during his first year.

After graduating in 1955, Wyman began his working career at the General Electric Co. as an auditor, travelling to different states as well as internationally. In later years, he became a specialist in their financial administration. He retired in 1995 and at that time joined the Elfun Society.

Having a wide variety of interests, Wyman met his wife Joy on a chairlift at Killington Ski Resort. Together they shared a great deal of time downhill and cross country skiing. He taught her how to play tennis and both of them participated, very actively, in tennis and platform tennis (paddle) tournaments, belonging to teams at the Belle Haven Club in Greenwich, CT and Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, MD. When transferred to Schenectady in 1988, he and Joy hiked in the Adirondacks near Lake Placid and traveled extensively after his retirement.

In the 1990's, Wyman began flying single engine planes and became a pilot, receiving his training at Schenectady Airport with James Bendick and Albany Airport with Bill Huber. He assisted Peter Sajta of the Lazy 8 R/C Model Flying Club in Johnstown, NY and there built and flew a model of the Sperry Messenger Plane.  Both men were very active in the Empire State Aerosciences Museum in Schenectady, where they donated the plane once completed. Wyman also loved painting and sculpting.

Survivors include his loving wife Joy (Sperry) of Saratoga Springs; brother Jon Emery of NY, NY; sister Jane (Ben) Draper of Robesonia, PA; niece and nephew Laura (James) Nelson and Benjamin (Angela) Draper as well as many cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Donations may be made in his name to the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, 250 Rudy Chase Dr., Schenectady, NY 12302
